Are SharePoint Add-ins still supported?

No. Microsoft has retired the SharePoint Add-in model in SharePoint Online. Current add-ons, including this suite, are built on the SharePoint Framework (SPFx).

Who can install web parts?

Adding a package to the tenant app catalogue needs the SharePoint Administrator or Global Administrator role. After that, anyone who can edit a page can add the web parts.

Can a third-party web part see our content?

It depends on the product, so ask the vendor. These web parts run in your tenant. The only outside connection is the licence check. The licence check sends your tenant ID, the signed-in user’s login name and the site address to our licence server.

What a SharePoint web part is

A web part is a block you add to a SharePoint page, such as text, images, links or news. SharePoint Online includes a standard set.

Third-party web parts add layouts and features the standard set does not have.

Apps, add-ins and add-ons are the same idea

Current SharePoint add-ons are built on the SharePoint Framework (SPFx). Each one is packaged as an app (an .sppkg file) and added to your app catalogue.

Microsoft has retired the older SharePoint Add-in model in SharePoint Online, so choose add-ons built on SPFx.

How installation works
